Cork forms a major component in a wide variety of compositions employed by the gasket fabricator industry. Loss of fluid and loss of pressure in hydraulic and pneumatic devices is prevented by the proper design and use of seals, packings and gaskets. Definitions of seals (static or dynamic), packings and gaskets are not exact but generally speaking, if the seal is static, it is frequently called a gasket.

A static seal is a gasket used to prevent the flow of fluid across a static joint between two parts of a pressure vessel. A good example of a static seal is the gasket between the cylinder block of an automobile engine. A dynamic seal is used to prevent the flow of fluid across a sliding or rotating joint between two members of a hydraulic or pneumatic device. The piston packing in a cylinder and the shaft packing of a rotary pump are examples of this type of seal. ECORE International manufactures cork and cork/rubber compositions suitable for gasket applications.

Composition cork consists of binder that is typically the natural resins in cork, phenolic resins, protein, or other special polymeric binders. These binders coat each particle of cork and are joined together under pressure to form a solid mass. The form of this mass may be either in block form that is then cut into sheet material or in log form to produce continuous rolls of gasketing material.

Cork/rubber composition involves the introduction of rubber into the cork composition. This can also be molded into blocks for sheeting or pressed into continuous roll forms. Of the composition cork materials already described, those combinations containing phenolic resin or protein binder systems are the least expensive, followed in increasing order by special polymeric systems and cork and rubber combinations.

Composition cork and cork/rubber composition materials are widely used by sub-assemblers and sub-contractors serving the automotive, railroad, aviation and agricultural machinery industries. Additionally, these materials can be used for gasketing purposes for machinery, pumps, meters, home appliances, laundry machinery, electrical switch-gear (transformers) and public utilities. Through constant improvements in processing and in the development of binder formulations, ECORE International’s line of composition cork products has proved itself adaptable to the ever-changing requirements demanded of it in the fabricating industry.

Cork possesses a broad variety of physical properties. When the material is converted into a series of composition formulas for gasketing, the resulting products are among the oldest, most widely used and most economical of resilient gasketing materials in the industry. ECORE develops composition cork gasketing materials with a high degree of dimensional stability and a controlled compression set performance, a feature that is especially desirable in the automotive industry. Composition cork materials have high oil resistancy, a high degree of compressibility with practically no lateral flow, an unusual degree of recoverability and a high degree of impermeability under relatively low bolting pressures. They also possess inherently high friction values and will withstand extremely high bolting pressures without crushing. Composition cork materials are generally recommended for use where sustained temperatures at the sealing line do no exceed 250°F, and are not to be used for the sealing of alkalies, inorganic acids or oxidizing solutions.

ECORE also offers a number of specialized materials, including the highly compressible and recoverable E-20 composition cork material. This material is especially functional where impermeability is required under low bolting pressures, yet it is highly crush resistant to extremely severe bolt loads. Like all other compositions manufactured by ECORE, E-20 is highly resistant to mold or fungus growth, is ozone-resistant and conforms very well to minor surface irregularities in flanges.
